About Jalaun District (Uttar Pradesh)

Jalaun district, a part of Jhansi division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Orai town. There are two interesting stories associated with the name of the district Jalaun. Natives of the district believe that earlier Jalaun was covered by a dense forest which looked like a net and in Hindi the term net is called Jal and forests is called Van. So, both the Hindi terms together created a new word i.e., Jalvan. With the passage of time the term Jalvan transformed to the present name Jalaun. The second story claims that the Jalaun dstrict was named after a popular saint of that time 'Jalana'. At the very beginning it was an abode of two prominent Rajput clans, the Sengars in the east and the Kachwahas in the west. In the early 14th century, a major portion of the place, Jalaun was under the rule of Bundels. After sometime the place was passed under the rule of the Mughal Empire. The rule of Akbar’s governors at Kalpi maintained their dominance with a nominal authority over the surrounding district, on the other hand the seeds of chronic revolt were germinated in the minds of the Bundela chiefs, which culminated in the war of independence under Maharaja Chhatrasal. But on the outbreak of a rebellion in 1671 Akbar, himself went there so to control the situation and occupied a large province to the south of the Yamuna. The British came and captured Jalaun in the year 1806. But in 1840, when Nana Gobind Ras was died without descendants, the place was automatically annexed to British India according to the doctrine of lapse. In this way numerous notable changes were place in the boundary of the territory. Moreover, the place of Jalaun has witnessed much violence during the Revolt of 1857.
