Ambedkar Nagar district, a part of Faizabad division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Akbarpur town. The district came into existence in the year 1996 and it was named after Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who worked for the upliftment of the deprived classes, women and other weaker sections of the society.

Arunima Sinha, the first women amputee to climb Mount Everest was born in the year 1988 in the Ambedkar Nagar district. In 2015, the Government of India conferred her with the prestigious Padma Shri Award.

Geographically, the district lies at 28°72'N latitude, 77°29'E longitude and 133 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.75% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,350 sq. km. and in terms of geographical area it secures 54th rank in the state and 458th rank in India. It is bounded by Basti district on the North, Sultanpur district on the South, Sant Kabir Nagar district, Azamgarh district and Gorakhpur district on the East and Faizabad district on the West. Saryu River, the main river in the district is located at its northern boundary. The climate of the district is quite similar to the climate of the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Its climate may be categorized into three distinct seasons likewise extremely hot summer, fairly cold winter and rainy monsoon. The actual rainfall in the district was 1393.1 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district has 5 tehsils namely Akbarpur, Tanda, Jalalpur, Alapur and Bhiti. Further these tehsils are divided into 11 developmental blocks such as Akbarpur, Baskhari, Bhiti, Bhiyaon, Jahangirganj, Jalalpur, Katehari, Ramnagar, Rajesultanpur, Tanda and Bewana. The Lok Sabha constituencies in the district are Ambedkar Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar (Rajesultanpur, Alapur, Kalilabad, Mehandawal) and Bheeti. On the other hand, the district has 5 assembly seats such as Katehari, Akbarpur, Tanda, Jalalpur and Rajesultanpur. Moreover, the district comprises 7 towns and 1,750 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 23,97,888 out of which 12,12,410 are males and 11,85,478 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 978 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 18.30% including 18.29% were males and 18.32% were females. The population density in the district is 1,020 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 49,757 including 25,782 were males and 23,975 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 2,347 out of which 1,353 were males and 994 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 82.81% and 16.75% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 91.82%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products helps in its economy to a great extent. The district is famous for Tanda Terracotta. Some chief manufacturing industries in the district are household production, power looms and farming. The district has also a thermal power station of NTPC. Jaypee Group (Jaypee Ayoudha Greeding), a cement manufacturing plant at Naseebjot Village near Tanda and one sugar factory named Akbarpur Sugar Mill, situated near Mijhaura, about ten kms. from the district headquarters are the other prominent industries of the district. Moreover, Akbarpur town and district headquarter of Ambedkar Nagar district is also remarkably contributing in its economy by producing plastic along with farm based products. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 13,02,062 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 8,02,734 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 11,38,921 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 6,82,174 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 41,808 at Current Price and Rs. 25,042 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed governmen-aided and privately managed schools and degree colleges. It provides a platform for higher education. The recognised educational institutions in the district are Rajkiya Engineering College, Mahamaya Rajkiya Allopathic Medical College, Pt. Ram Lakhan Shukla Rajkeey Post Graduate College, Manyawar Kanshiram Engineering College of Information Technology, Ramabai Government Women Post Graduate College, SLJB PG College, Kanya Inter College, Rajesultanpur Group of College, Sirsiya Group of college, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 72.23% out of which 81.66% are males and 62.66% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 14,86,939 including 8,46,676 are males and 6,40,263 are females.

Ram Manohar Lohia, a distinguished activist during the period of Indian struggle for independence and a nationalist political leader was born on 23rd March, 1910 at Akbarpur town in the district. He is still alive in the heart of every Indian due to his active participation in the Quit India Movement. Ram Murti Verma, an eminent Indian politician and member of the 16th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh is a member of the Samajwadi Party who represents Akbarpur constituency of Uttar Pradesh. He is serving as the Minister of Milk and Dairy development of Uttar Pradesh, since 15th March, 2012.

During the year 2021, there were 6,41,390 domestic tourists who visited these places of the district. The unique and marvelous centres of attraction in the district provides not only mental relaxation but also good experiences to its travelers. The shrine of Ashraf Jahangir Semnani in Kicchocha Sharif is one of the holy places of the district. Pilgrims from far off places comes to this place to offer their prayers. Shravan Kshetra, a place located in the district is closely associated with an interesting mythological story. Legends believe that King Dasharatha of Ramayana killed the Sravana Kumar at Shravan Kshetra. Every year on Magh Purnima (February full Moon) an annual fair is held at this place. Mahadev mandir, a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated at Beedi village in the district. Some other places of interest in the district are Hanuman Mandir, Maa Gaytri Shakti Peeth, Shree Baram Baba Mandir, Maa Kalika Mandir and many more.
