About Dimapur District (Nagaland)

Dimapur district is a district of the Nagaland state with its administrative headquarters located at Dimapur town. In the earlier times the Dimapur was under the Kachari tribe and declared it as their capital till 13th century AD. The ruins that found in and around the region have proved the glorious history of the Kachari kingdom. These ruins found here have depicted a culture that was influenced by Non-Aryans. The district got its name from the three the Kachari dialects i.e. di meaning river, ma meaning great or big and pur meaning city. All these three terms together means 'the city near the great river'. Dimapur is the place where the kingdom of Kachari was flourished and constructed some wonderful monuments such as Kachari Rajbari Fort. Dimapur was emerged as a separate district in the map of Nagaland state in the year 1998.

Geographically, the district lies at 25°91' N latitude and 93°73' E longitude. The altitude in the district is 260 m. In the year 2021, there was a total 63.61% forest area of total geographical area. The altitude in the district is 260 m. The district encompasses a geographical area of 927 sq km. and it is bounded by Karbi Anglong district and Golaghat district of Assam on the North and West, Kohima district on the South and East and Karbi Anglong district on the West. The principal rivers in the district are Dimasa, Dhansiri, Diphy, Chathe and Zubza. The climate of the district remains hot and humid in the summers and moderately cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 852.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 sub-divisions namely Dhansriphar, Medziphema, Nuiland and Kuhuboto. Moreover, it comprises 7 towns and 222 villages. The administrative language in the district is English.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 3,78,811 including 1,97,394 are males and 1,81,417 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 919 (females for every 1000 males) and child ratio of 966 (females per 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 22.58% out of which 18.44% were males and 27.43% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Christian with 61.84% of the total population. The population density in the district is 409 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Bengali and Hindi with 15.23% and 9.89%. The major schedule tribe population in the district are Naga and Sema with 90.77% and 35.88% of the total population. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 13,455 out of which 6,652 were males and 6,803 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 1,062 out of which 774 were males and 288 were females.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on both the agricultural and industrial sectors. Half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are paddy, maize, wheat, pulses, pea, beans, grams, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. Industrially, also the district is quite well developed. The Industrial Growth Centre in Nagaland is located at Ganeshnagar of Dhansiripar Sub-Division, a place mostly inhabitant by the Dimasa Kachari. Furthermore, it consists of seven Dimasa Villages namely Dhansiripar, Disaguphu, Amaluma, Doyapur, Ganeshnagar, Hazadisa and Manglumukh. The Government of Nagaland has a Horticulture farm, which is popularly known as Green Park, a prominent place of attraction for tourists and natives. Also, the Government of Nagaland hosts the bi-annual North East Agri-Expo Sale cum Exhibition at the North East Agri Expo Site at 5 Mile. Every year a Expo is organised here in the first week of the month of December.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. A number of schools in the district declared English as their medium of instruction and are affiliated to the Nagaland Board of School Education. Some of the most reputed educational schools include Patkai School, Holy Cross School, St Paul Hr Sec School, Carmel Hr. Sec. School, Pranab Vidyapith, Dimapur Railway High School, St. Joseph's Hr Sec School, Government Hr Sec School, M.G.M. Higher Secondary School, Christian Higher Secondary School, Eastern Academy Hr. Sec. School, Queen Mary School, etc. Women’s’ Industrial Training Institute, run by the Dept. of Employment imparts vocational/skilled training. As per 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 84.79% out of which 87.54% are males and 81.77% are females. The literate population in the district is 2,78,037 including 1,50,142 are males and 1,27,895 are females. The illiterate population in the district is 1,00,774 including 47,252 are males and 53,522 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Dimapur Jain Temple, built in the year 1947 has an impressive structure and architecturally very beautiful. The temple is decorated by some intricate glasses. Natives of the district considered it as a very sacred temple. Principal deity of the temple is Mahaveer Swami. Rangapahar Reserve forest, a famous forest located in the district has a variety of plants with great medical importance. The forest is blessed with a huge variety of birds and animals. There are many endangered species conserved in this reserve which are rarely seen by any one and are on the verge of extinction. Besides these, Diphupar, Nichuguard, Sukhajan, Kuki Dolong, Thilixu and Seithekima are also popular among the visitors of the country. Chekiye and Ruzaphema have bazaars, where tourists can purchase beautiful handicrafts. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Ruins of Kachari Kingdom, Diezephe Craft Village and many more.
