About Rewari District (Haryana)
Like every place, Rewari has also an interesting story in context of its name. The natives of the district believe that in the era of Mahabharata there was a king named Rewat who had a daughter called Rewati. So, her father generally used to call her Rewa out of love. Then he founded a place and named the place "Rewa Wadi" after her. Since Rewa got married to Balram, the elder brother of Krishna, hence the king gave the place “Rewa-Wadi” to his daughter as a gift. With the passage of time, the name Rewa-Wadi became Rewari. During the period of Sultunate, Hem Chandra Vikramaditya had developed a cannon foundry in the place of Rewari, laying the foundation of a metalwork industry in brass, copper sheets. He had supplied cannons and Gunpowder to Sher Shah Suri from 1535 onwards and also served as an adviser to the last ruler of Sur dynasty till the year 1553. Hem Chandra as a king had won total 22 battles from Punjab to Delhi during the period 1553-56. Even the great Mughal king, Akbar was defeated in his hand at Agra and Delhi. But he lost to Akbar on 5th November, 1556 at Panipat where he died as well. Then Akbar declared Rewari as a sarkar under his Delhi Empire. After Akbar also other notable Mughal rulers ruled the place for a long period of time. In the time of British rule, Rao Tula Ram, the ruler of Rewari participated very actively in the India's First War of Independence in 1857. Finally, Rewari was merged as a separate district in the map of Haryana state on 1st November, 1989.
Rao Gopal Dev was revolutionary leader of the 19th century in Rewari. The place Rewari has a road which is named after him. Santosh Yadav is a famous personality from the district. She is the first woman in the world to climb the Mount Everest two times. The Government of India honored her with the prestigious Padma Shri Award in the year 2000.
Geographically, the district has a total 1,594 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 13th in State and 537th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 28°18'N latitude, 76°62'E and 245 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 3.96% forest area of total geographical area. The climate of the district is extremely hot in the summers and fairly cold in the winters. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 830.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-districts namely Kosli, Bawal and Dharuhera. Moreover, it has 9 towns and 403 villages. Hindi is its official language. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Rewari which is situated at a distance of 335 kms from the State Capital.
Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 1,69,128 households with a total of 9,00,332 comprising 4,74,335 are males and 4,25,997 are females and causing it to rank 20th in the State and 466th in India. The density of population of the district is 565 persons per sq. km. The sex ratio is pegged at 898 females for every 1000 males while the child ratio stands at 787 females per 1000 males. The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 1,82,606 including 95,571 are males and 87,035 are females. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 17.64% out of which 17.69% are males and 17.58% are females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 20,319 out of which 10,645 were males and 9,674 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 7,235 out of which 4,450 were males and 2,785 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 98.76% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 99.13%.
Economically, industries are the prime source of income for the people of the district. Rewari is famous for its metal works. It is brass hub in India. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 4,39,102 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 3,33,198 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,93,597 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 2,99,169 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2011-12 was Rs. 1,18,250 lakh at Current Price during the period 2004-2005. Loamy sand and sandy soil is found here. A number of pump sets are also available here which are the main sources of irrigation. Pulses, Maize, Guar, Wheat, Gram, Mustard and Rabi pulses are grown here mainly.
Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 80.99% including 91.44% are males and 69.57% are females. The total literate population of the district is 6,36,947 comprising 3,75,453 are males and 2,61,494 are females. The district is consisting of numerous recognized universities, degree colleges, B.Ed. colleges, higher secondary schools, industrial training institute and many more. The name of the main institutes is Government Higher Secondary School, Hindu High School, Ahir College, Kishanlal Public College, Shishu Shala and Kendriya Vidyalaya. It also has several private engineering, management, law, and nursing colleges.
Rao Birender Singh was an Indian politician. He became the minister in the state government of Punjab. In 1967, he was the Chief Minister of Haryana for a few months. He also served as a minister in Punjab state, Haryana state and the Union cabinet as well as the first speaker of Haryana state assembly in 1966-67. Ajay Singh Yadav is a member of the Indian National Congress. He served as the Minister of Power, Forests and Environment and minister of Irrigation, Revenue and Elections in the state government. Rao Inderjit Singh is an Indian politician from the Bhartiya Janta Party. He is a Minister in the State government. He represents the Ahir community. Rao Narbir Singh Yadav, a prominent member of the Bhartiya Janata Party who served as State Home Minister in 1987 and Transport, Food and Supply and Cooperation Minister in 1996 in the Harayana Government. He also held the charge of Sports and Printing & Stationery ministry in 1996. He served as the Union Cabinet Minister for the Environment, as Minister of State for External Affairs and as Minister of State for Defence Production.
The district is a place with numerous famous historical and religious tourist places. These places are Red Mosque (Lal Masjid), Baag Wala Talab, Bada Talab (Rao Tej Singh Talab), Ghanteshwar Mandir, Bhagwat Bhakti Ashram. In the year 2020-2021, there were total 25,191 domestic tourists. Lal Masjid was built in 1570 by Mughal Emperor, Akbar. There are two tombs nearby the mosque. Baag Wala Talab was constructed by Ram Ahir, the son of Rao Gujjarmal. It has no water at present. Bada Talab is also called as Rao Tej Singh Talab after Rao Tej Singh. It was constructed by Rao Tej Singh during the period of 1810-1815. It is located near to the old Town Hall. The source of water of this talab is either rain or canal. There is separate bathing space for males and females. There is also a Hanuman temple located on its bank. Bhagwati Bhakti ashram is located in Rampura. Temple of Baba Bheron Nath at Khol, temple of Swamy Sharananad at Darauli, ashram of Baba Purshotam Dass at Balwari village, temple of Baba Raghunath at Sangwadi village and temple of Baba Mohan Dass at village Bharawa are some other significant places of interest in this place.
